A Family-Friendly Trip to San Diego, USA
San Diego had been on our USA travel list for a while and after this four-day getaway, we completely understand why.
From Friday to Monday, we experienced the perfect balance of beach, city, and relaxed family travel. If you’re looking for an easy U.S. destination with kids, San Diego checks so many boxes.
Why San Diego Is Perfect with Kids
One of the first things that stood out was the weather. Around 25°C / 77°F, sunny skies, and a light breeze — comfortable enough to stay outside all day. No extreme heat. No constant layering. No overthinking nap schedules around the sun.
When traveling in the USA with young kids, climate matters more than you think. San Diego makes it easy. We used the heated pool daily and loved having the beach right in front of us. Switching between relaxing and active moments felt effortless.
Where to Stay in San Diego with Kids: Coronado Island
We stayed on Coronado Island, just across the bay from downtown San Diego and it quickly became one of our favorite family-friendly spots in California. Coronado feels calm and almost village-like, while still being very close to the city.
We stayed at Shore House at The Del (Hotel del Coronado, Hilton property). Why it worked so well for a family trip:
- Beachfront location
- Spacious layout
- Easy walkability
- Calm atmosphere
- Resort amenities without feeling overwhelming
Using Hilton points made it very reasonable price-wise, always a plus when traveling as a family.
Eating & Exploring Coronado with Kids
One of the biggest advantages of staying on Coronado Island? You don’t need a car to enjoy your evenings. There are great restaurants within walking distance, boutique shops, and plenty of space to stroll with kids. We loved dinner at Little Frenchi, a charming French bistro that felt cozy but still relaxed enough for a family meal.
For family travel, that balance matters.
Getting Around San Diego with Kids
Travel logistics can make or break a U.S. city trip with kids. To get from Coronado to downtown San Diego, you can:
- Take the bridge
- Use the ferry
We mostly chose the ferry, not just because it’s practical, but because it’s an experience in itself.
Why This Worked So Well with Kids
- Bikes are allowed on the ferry
- Avoids taxi issues with car seats
- Adds a “mini adventure” element
When traveling in the USA without your own car seats everywhere, creative transport solutions are key.
Biking Around San Diego
We rented bikes at Holland Bikes (a little Dutch touch abroad). What made it even better: bikes are also allowed on San Diego’s trolley (public transport).
We combined biking + trolley to visit Old Town San Diego — smaller, charming, and perfect for a short family stop. For city trips with kids, combining transport methods keeps it interesting and manageable.
San Diego Zoo with Kids
The San Diego Zoo was one of the highlights of our trip — and absolutely worth including in any San Diego family itinerary.
What makes it special:
- Beautifully landscaped, almost jungle-like
- Wide walking paths
- Sky tram across the park (huge hit with kids)
- Rare giant pandas
Despite its size, it felt organized and calm, something that makes a big difference when visiting with young children.
Harbor & Seaport Village
We also explored the harbor area, where you can visit impressive navy ships, fascinating even for young kids.
Near the ferry terminal, we found a cozy waterfront bar for a quick drink, small moments like this make family travel feel balanced. Seaport Village is more touristy, but still pleasant for a stroll. Waterfront views, shops, casual dining — easy and low-stress.
Why San Diego Works So Well for Family Travel in the USA
San Diego surprised us in the best way. It’s:
- Relaxed without being boring
- Lively without being overwhelming
- Walkable and bike-friendly
- Easy to navigate with kids
The combination of beach life, city experiences, public transport, and outdoor space makes it ideal for a short U.S. family getaway.
And honestly? It’s a place we’d happily return to.
